Creating Networks, Creating Community, Creating Change

Lagging internet is a massive headache—especially for NGO staff located across Africa. We saw firsthand the handicap this caused and decided to create the first cooperative program designed to leverage relationships with Internet Service Providers and fellow nonprofits to ensure everyone stays connected.

Here’s how it works. When two or more nonprofits in a specific region buy internet as a group, prices drop for all participants. And at scale, this can easily become monthly discounts of 30-70% or more. It’s a powerful demonstration of the power of working together. Ultimately, you spend less on technology and more on furthering the causes you care about.

The more nonprofits that join, the more effective the program becomes. You don’t pay us—our mission is to serve you—and help you replace high internet overhead with faster, more affordable internet you can finally rely on.

See Our Program in Action in Uganda

In Uganda, an area in which we’ve worked for 6.5 years, here’s an example of what a local nonprofit can save.

Wholesale Internet Co-op Uganda Country Map Man On Street Using Phone

Typically, in Ugandan cities such as Kampala or Entebbe, the price per megabyte is around $100. However, as more megabytes are purchased, the price continues to lower. For example:

Current ISP price is $75 per MB
T4G’s Internet Co-op price is $30 per MB
= Savings of 60%

The more megabytes purchased, the more nonprofits will save. Currently, one of our Co-ops in Uganda has a price of just $30 per megabyte. With more nonprofits joining, it will soon be reduced to $25 per megabyte.

This means an average of 60% in savings for each nonprofit that joins the program.

*These rates frequently change and this example is representative of the kind of rates you can expect when working with us—not guarantees.

Women for Women

Connecting NGOs and ISPs

“Before working with Telecom4Good, we just crossed our fingers, especially for ISPs abroad. We have IT people in each country, but at headquarters, we can’t know the right resources in that many locations. I’m glad Telecom4Good does. It was Telecom4Good’s help with contracting that allowed us to find the best ISPs—there was no other way we could have done that in all our countries without support. Their facilitation for pricing and understanding of how other NGOs use their services to set up with an ISP was also valuable. It’s not a question of engineering, but rather connecting people.”

Frequently Asked Questions

If you’re considering joining the Wholesale Internet Co-op, know we’re here to help you make an informed decision.

How much will this program help me save?

Nonprofits are able to save anywhere from 30 to 70% on their monthly internet costs when they participate in the program.

How do you find the right Internet Service Providers?

Choosing the right ISP is extremely important. When Telecom4Good negotiates with an ISP, we test and monitor the quality of their internet for more than 60 days before allowing them to join.

We also ask all ISPs for nonprofit references to ensure they’re experienced in resolving network outages and working alongside nonprofits of all sizes. Our team is thorough in our vetting of all ISPs, so program participants can rest easy knowing they’re getting the high-quality internet they need to meet their goals.

What if I end up needing more or less internet?

If you’d like to increase or decrease your bandwidth, our support staff will work alongside your ISP to ensure your upgrade or downgrade is completed both quickly and correctly.

Do I have to use the same amount of internet as others in the program?

No – no two nonprofits have the same needs, and no two nonprofits are required to utilize the same budget, bandwidth, etc. We will connect each nonprofit with their ISP separately, with no programmatic or budgetary commitments based on other program participants.

How does the program really work?

By participating in the Internet Co-op, you can purchase internet at a group rate – which is more affordable than purchasing on your own. For example, if you have 10 megs of bandwidth at your office, you will pay the price of 10 megs. However, as part of the Co-Op, you can purchase your internet based on the total amount needed in your Co-Op area. So, if you and the nonprofits around you need 75 megs of internet, you can purchase this internet at the 75-meg price, saving anywhere from 30-70% each month.

It’s important to note that nonprofits are not paying Telecom4Good for their internet service. Each nonprofit pays their ISP, which we help connect them with. Telecom4Good itself is not an internet service provider.

**Can I join this program from anywhere?

Currently, the program is based outside of the U.S., with most nonprofits coming from Africa. We can provide discounts from ISPs inside the U.S. but do not currently have an Internet Co-op Program that leverages group buying in this country.

Interested in a co-op that’s not currently in place? Schedule a consultation so we can learn more about your needs and location.

What types of nonprofits can take part in this program?

We work with all nonprofits feeling the growing pains of slow internet. Your mission matters to us. We want you to have the internet you need to care for others with confidence.

How do I know if this program is right for my nonprofit?

Our process is simple and straightforward, allowing you to get the answers you need to determine whether or not you want to join the program. Simply request a quote, and our team will be in touch to learn more about your internet challenges and how we can help.
